On This Day: Planning Operation Barbarossa

1940. It is the middle of World War II. France had fallen. And Hitler was planning to move eastward. Despite that fact that Germany and the USSR had signed a non-aggression pact in 1939.

Well, on December 18, 1940, Hitler issued his "Directive No. 21 Operation Barbarossa".

What is Operation Barbarossa? Basically, it's the code name for the secretive preparations to invade and conquer the Soviet Union... i.e. to extend war to the eastern front. These plans would go into effect during the spring of 1941.

So... Why do we make mention this?

Because Operation Barbarossa plays a role in our feature film, Under Jakob's Ladder. It's the threat that is casting a shadow over the people who live in Jakob's world.

While they didn't know what Operation Barbarossa would bring, of course we know today that Operation Barbarossa ultimately failed. In fact, it's often credited as being the turning point in the war that led to Hitler's defeat...
